At Newfield, we do lots of work on developing our children’s physical skills and independence.
Each week, learners take part in sessions in the pool - some children go down to Darwen Leisure Centre, where they are learning to swim, working alongside pool staff and Newfield staff, and also practising independence skills getting dressed afterwards.
Others, with more specialist physical needs, go to our hydro pool where they work on their personal physical development skills.
Wherever they go, they love having a splash and enjoying the water.
Some of our older students got to use the new pool flotation device in hydro this week. The float went under their bodies to support them and they said that they really enjoyed it, felt safe and independent. They were really happy to do some stretching and leg kicking really well too.
Two of our younger pupils, with complex health needs, had a lovely, safe, splash free session. It worked really well, and the boys were really relaxed and again able to be more independent in the pool.
One of their mum’s was quite overwhelmed by the fact we’ve finally managed to get him in the pool - She was extremely grateful and wanted the teacher to pass on thanks to everyone who made it possible. Well done to Rachael, our hydro HLTA!
