Each year we celebrate European Day of Language as a school (with some world languages and cultures thrown in to recognise our diverse culture here at Newfield!)
We had linked our celebrations to our curriculum themes and had a huge array of cultural activities going on including exploring new instruments, art, dances, carnivals and food from around the world.
In 2025, the theme, “Languages open hearts and minds,” highlights the power of languages to connect us, inspire new ideas and broaden horizons. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the range and diversity of languages spoken throughout Europe while celebrating the languages spoken at Newfield!
C1 and C2 celebrated languages day with a Mexican hat dance and maracas!
In our assemblies this afternoon classes joined together to share what they had learnt - we had performances based on Saint Saens ‘Carnival of the Animals’ where there were lions, swans and an amazing elephant! Everyone had a lovely time.
Following the French theme some classes, for their afternoon snack went fancy and had crème caramel and a fresh baguette. It was a great opportunity for communication and commenting on whether the children enjoyed it (they all did) and to do some good signing to ask for more!
In S9 they have been learning about Mardi Gras in the communication, language and literacy and topic sessions. In English they have spent a week on travel writing and here are the fabulous magazines they have each created and their topic display board!
We have had a great day celebrating different languages and cultures based on our learning so far this term.
